Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about eSIM and staying connected
Getting Started with eSIM
What is an eSIM?▾
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built into your phone. Instead of inserting a physical SIM card, you download a digital profile that connects you to a mobile network. It works exactly like a regular SIM — you get data, calls, and texts — but everything is managed digitally. For travelers, this means you can buy and activate a data plan before you even land in a new country.
Is my phone compatible with eSIM?▾
Most phones released after 2019 support eSIM. This includes iPhone XS/XR and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and many flagship devices from Huawei, Xiaomi, and others. The easiest way to check is to go to your phone’s Settings → Mobile/Cellular → look for “Add eSIM” or “Add Mobile Plan.” You can also use our device compatibility checker on the Snapzim homepage.
How is an eSIM different from a physical SIM?▾
A physical SIM is a small chip you insert into your phone. An eSIM is built into your device and activated digitally by scanning a QR code. With an eSIM, you don’t need to visit a store, wait for shipping, or swap cards when you travel. You can store multiple eSIM profiles on one device and switch between them. Your physical SIM slot stays free — so you can keep your home SIM for calls and use the eSIM for data abroad.
Can I use eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time?▾
Yes! This is one of the biggest advantages of eSIM. Most eSIM-compatible phones support Dual SIM mode — your physical SIM stays active for calls and texts from your home number, while the eSIM provides mobile data abroad. This means you can stay reachable on your regular number while using cheap local data rates.
Plans & Coverage
What types of plans does Snapzim offer?▾
Snapzim offers three types of eSIM data plans: Local plans for a single country (e.g., Thailand, USA), Regional plans that cover a group of countries (e.g., Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa), and Global plans that work across 130+ countries. Data packages range from 1GB to 10GB, with validity periods of 7 or 30 days depending on the plan.
How many countries does Snapzim cover?▾
Snapzim covers 130+ countries worldwide. This includes popular digital nomad destinations like Thailand, Portugal, Mexico, Spain, Indonesia, Vietnam, Colombia, and many more. Regional plans are great for multi-country trips — for example, a single Europe plan covers travel across all EU countries.
Which plan should I choose — local, regional, or global?▾
It depends on your travel plans: Local plans are cheapest if you’re staying in one country. Regional plans are best for multi-country trips within one area (e.g., backpacking through Europe or Southeast Asia). Global plans are the most flexible — one plan works everywhere, ideal if you’re hopping between continents or don’t have a fixed itinerary. If you’re a digital nomad with an unpredictable schedule, a regional or global plan gives you the most freedom.
How much data do I need?▾
It depends on your usage: 1GB is enough for maps, messaging, and light browsing for a few days. 3GB works for a week of regular use including social media and email. 5GB is comfortable for two weeks with some video streaming. 10GB is ideal for heavy users, remote work, or longer trips. As a digital nomad, if you’re working online daily (video calls, cloud tools, etc.), we recommend at least 5GB for a 30-day plan.
Activation & Setup
How do I activate my Snapzim eSIM?▾
After purchase, you’ll receive a QR code via email. To activate: 1) Go to your phone’s Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM (or Add Mobile Plan). 2) Scan the QR code. 3) Follow the on-screen prompts to install the eSIM profile. 4) Make sure the eSIM line is turned on and set as your data line. The whole process takes about 2 minutes. For detailed instructions, visit our How to Use page.
When should I install my eSIM?▾
Install the eSIM before you travel while you still have Wi-Fi. The installation process needs an internet connection. Once installed, the eSIM profile sits on your phone and activates when you arrive at your destination and turn on mobile data. You don’t need to be in the destination country to install it — just to start using the data.
My eSIM isn’t working. What should I do?▾
Try these steps in order: 1) Make sure the eSIM line is turned ON in your phone settings. 2) Set the eSIM as your mobile data line (not your voice line). 3) Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM line. 4) Toggle Airplane Mode on and off to force the phone to reconnect. 5) Restart your phone. 6) Check that you haven’t run out of data. If none of these work, contact our support team with your order number and phone model.
Can I use Wi-Fi and eSIM data at the same time?▾
Yes. Your phone will use Wi-Fi when it’s available and automatically switch to eSIM data when you’re not connected to Wi-Fi. You can also manually control this in your phone settings. Many digital nomads keep Wi-Fi as their primary connection at cafés and accommodations, and use eSIM data when they’re out and about.
Troubleshooting
I can’t scan the QR code. What should I do?▾
First, make sure you’re using your phone’s built-in QR scanner (Camera app on iPhone, Camera or Google Lens on Android) — not a third-party app. If the QR code is on your computer screen, try increasing the screen brightness. If it still won’t scan, you can manually enter the activation code: go to Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM → select “Enter Details Manually” and type in the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your order email.
My eSIM is installed but showing “No Service”▾
This is usually a settings issue. Check: 1) The eSIM line is turned ON in Settings → Mobile/Cellular. 2) Data Roaming is enabled for the eSIM line. 3) The eSIM is set as your mobile data line. 4) You’re in a country covered by your plan. If you’re in a covered country and it still shows “No Service,” try toggling Airplane Mode on and off, then restart your phone.
I have signal but no internet / data isn’t working▾
Try this checklist: 1) Make sure the eSIM line is selected as your mobile data line (Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Mobile Data → select your eSIM). 2) Turn Data Roaming ON for the eSIM line. 3) Check that you haven’t run out of data — log into your Snapzim account to check remaining balance. 4) Reset your network settings: Settings → General → Reset → Reset Network Settings (iPhone) or Settings → System → Reset → Reset Network Settings (Android). Note: this will erase saved Wi-Fi passwords.
My data is very slow. How can I fix this?▾
Slow speeds can happen for several reasons: 1) Network congestion — in busy areas (airports, city centers), speeds can drop during peak hours. 2) Coverage area — you might be outside the plan’s coverage zone. Check your plan’s country list. 3) Phone settings — make sure you’re not stuck on 3G. Go to Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Voice & Data → select “5G” or “LTE” instead of “3G.” 4) Data throttling — some plans throttle speeds after a certain usage threshold. Check your plan details.
I accidentally deleted my eSIM. Can I reinstall it?▾
Unfortunately, eSIM profiles can only be installed once per QR code. If you deleted the eSIM profile, you’ll need to contact our support team with your order number. We can issue a replacement QR code in most cases, especially if the eSIM was never activated or used. This is why we recommend installing the eSIM only when you’re ready to travel.
Can I use my eSIM for hotspot / tethering?▾
Yes, in most cases. Hotspot/tethering works with Snapzim eSIMs on both iPhone and Android. To enable it: go to Settings → Personal Hotspot (iPhone) or Settings → Network & Internet → Hotspot & Tethering (Android) and turn it on. Note that some carriers may restrict tethering on certain plans. If hotspot isn’t working, try turning the eSIM off and on again, then re-enable hotspot.
My eSIM works in one country but not another on the same regional plan▾
Regional plans cover multiple countries, but the eSIM connects to different local carriers in each country. If it works in one country but not another: 1) Make sure the second country is actually covered by your specific plan — check the plan details page. 2) Try manually selecting a network: Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Network Selection → turn off “Automatic” and choose a local carrier from the list. 3) Toggle Airplane Mode to force reconnection. If it still doesn’t work, contact support with the specific country and your phone model.
Digital Nomad Lifestyle
Why do digital nomads prefer eSIM over local SIM cards?▾
eSIMs solve the biggest pain points for nomads: No store visits — buy and activate from anywhere. No SIM swapping — keep your home number active while using data abroad. Instant setup — land in a new country and you’re already connected. Multi-country coverage — regional and global plans work across borders without buying a new SIM each time. For nomads who move frequently, eSIM is the most practical solution.
What are the best digital nomad destinations with eSIM coverage?▾
Snapzim covers all major nomad hubs: Asia: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Bali, Ho Chi Minh City, Tokyo. Europe: Lisbon, Barcelona, Berlin, Porto, Tbilisi, Budapest. Latin America: Mexico City, Medellín, Buenos Aires, São Paulo. Middle East & Africa: Dubai, Cape Town, Nairobi. Regional plans make it especially easy to explore multiple countries within these areas.
Do I need a work visa to work remotely while traveling?▾
In most countries, working remotely on a tourist visa exists in a legal gray area. However, many countries now offer specific Digital Nomad Visas that legally allow you to work remotely. Popular options include Portugal (D7), Spain, Mexico (temporary resident), Thailand (LTR), Colombia, Indonesia (B211a), and Dubai. Requirements vary but usually include proof of income, health insurance, and a clean criminal record. Always check the specific country’s current regulations before you go.
How do digital nomads handle taxes?▾
Tax obligations depend on your citizenship and where you spend time. Key points: Most countries tax based on tax residency, not where you physically work. If you’re a US citizen, you owe US taxes regardless of where you live (though the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion can help). Many nomads establish tax residency in low-tax countries like the UAE, Georgia, or Thailand. The 183-day rule is common — spend more than 183 days in a country and you may become a tax resident. Always consult a tax professional who specializes in expat/nomad taxes.
Payments, Refunds & Support
What payment methods does Snapzim accept?▾
Snapzim accepts major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) as well as other popular payment methods available at checkout. All prices are displayed in Hungarian Forint (HUF). Your bank may apply currency conversion fees if your card is in a different currency.
What is the refund policy?▾
If your eSIM doesn’t work due to a technical issue on our end and we can’t resolve it, you’re eligible for a full refund. Refunds are also available if you purchased a plan but haven’t activated or used any data. Contact our support team with your order number and a description of the issue. We typically respond within 24 hours.
When does my data plan expire?▾
Your data plan’s validity period (7 or 30 days) starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in the destination country — not when you purchase it. If you buy a 30-day plan but don’t travel for two months, the 30 days start when you arrive and turn on data. Unused data expires at the end of the validity period and cannot be rolled over.
How do I contact support?▾
You can reach our support team at support@snapzim.com. Please include your order number and a description of your issue. We typically respond within 24 hours. You can also visit our Support page for more options.
